Vivi Bayliss
Director's concept - Testament
Going into a bit more detail

During March, I prepared a number of show concepts for applications. Although it takes more time than a CV and a cover letter, I really enjoy this type of application because I get to stretch my creative muscles, and I feel like I'm being judged on my skill more than my experience.
I got an interview for this production but was ultimately unsuccessful. However, the interview panel were absolutely lovely, and I plan to see the final production in the summer.
Testament is pitched as a triple bill of operatic works, all sharing stories about people trying to leave a record of their time on earth. My concept revolves around an archivist or historian going through files in a forgotten room, unearthing important people who have been overlooked, and breathing new life into their stories.
My degree is in Ancient and Medieval History, and I believe passionately in the importance of historians promoting honest accounts, even if they are uncomfortable or contradictory. History is messy and complex, but we should engage with all its different facets.
The three pieces have several themes in common: darker sides to love, regret, nighttime, and religion. I think these are such rich themes and the result would be a very dramatic, moving evening. Although I won't be directing this production, it gave me a chance to dig into material that was new to me, and that is really useful learning.
