Always An Artist - Week 8

Always An Artist - Week 8

Choreography continued this week, and I enjoyed how the pieces fell into place much more quickly as the idea took shape form its beginnings. However, the main event was on Sunday.

One of my youth groups had their showcase on Sunday, which consisted of a double bill of shows. First up, "The Moon Pearls." This was an ensemble show inspired by Elizabeth Goudge's novel, 'The Little White Horse' and incorporating influences of the Frantic Assembly style. This was the first time most of the company had encountered this type of physical theatre, so it was wonderful to share something I'm so passionate about with them.

The second piece was titled "A House Through Time," and was a vignette show travelling through theatrical history and genre. The young people created characters and situations, and I then wrote the script. I'm really proud of my writing for this piece, I genuinely think I could use it again. It was a great stretch of my creative muscles. It was a headache for the tech team though, because I needed multiple lightbulbs to operate independently and I committed the cardinal sin of writing this design choice into the script, making it 100% vital.

This was a great day for me creatively. I had the opportunity to be really ambitious, which isn't always an option in youth work, as it needs to fit the needs of the group. However, on this occasion it aligned really well to allow me to indulge my director's impulses and it was a very successful day.
